Child Care Resource & Referral Scholarship Program (Smart Start) - Scholarships for preschool children who would otherwise not be able to afford preschool. Also helps families find and afford quality childcare. |

Volunteers for Wilkes Literacy - Provides one-on-one tutoring for illiterate adults, English as a second language, and citizenship instruction by trained volunteers. Also class instruction for parents of Head Start Children. |

Foster Parents Association - Promotes quality family foster care and advocates for the rights and needs of children in foster care. |

Child Abuse Prevention Team (CAPT) - Focus on the prevention and general public awareness of child abuse. They are the sponsoring agency for OUR HOUSE, the Wilkes Children's Advocacy Center. Provides infant massage, parenting classes, public awareness, SAFE kids, Child safety programs, car seats, professional development, and child abuse prevention. |

Wilkes Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - Provides a link between the hearing impaired and the deaf communities by providing interpreting services, referral services, message relays, technical assistance, and computer assertive note taking system. The center offers hearing aids to the indigent through the Hearing Aid Bank and they teach sign language classes year round. |

Wilkes Developmental Day School - Provides a comprehensive child development training program for developmentally and multi-handicapped children ages birth to 21 years. |

seniors age 60 and over to work in schools, day care and Headstart centers, and other agencies. Grandparents
are assigned to one station where they serve one to three "special
kids" 20 hours weekly. |

visits/calls. Educational materials, therapeutic recreation,
counseling, loan of medical equipment, outreach, Senior Companion station,

service, consumer protection, housing, legal assistance, heat relief,
discount cards and press releases. |

American Red Cross (Wilkes-Alleghany Chapter) - Provides emergency and disaster preparedness training, food, clothing and shelter assistance to victims of local disasters, including single-family fires; provides food and beverage support for local fire fighters; provides communications and financial assistance and counseling to families with military members during family emergencies; performs blood collection services for patients in area hospitals; teaches CPR and First Aid classes and water safety instruction. |

BROC – Provides assistance for the unmet needs of
low-income clients, the dislocated workers and elderly of Care Connection – Offers information and referral to
those in need of help with any kind of crises. |

Samaritan Christian Ministry of Wilkes, Inc. - Our mission is to feed the hungry in Wilkes County. Meals are served on Saturday. There are a total of 17 delivery sites where bag and plate lunches are distributed |

Catherine H. Barber Memorial Homeless Shelter - Provides temporary overnight shelter and one hot meal a day for individuals and families who are homeless. |
