FAMILY & LITERACY SERVICES

Wilkes Family Resource Center - In collaboration with WCC and Wilkes Community Partnership for Children and others, provides job skills training, literacy training, parenting skills, childcare and transportation to families in need.

Child Care Resource & Referral Scholarship Program (Smart Start) - Scholarships for preschool children who would otherwise not be able to afford preschool. Also helps families find and afford quality childcare.

Volunteers for Wilkes Literacy - Provides one-on-one tutoring for illiterate adults, English as a second language, and citizenship instruction by trained volunteers. Also class instruction for parents of Head Start Children.

Legal Aid of North Carolina - Provides free legal advice and representation in civil matters to low income persons and persons 60 years of age and over.

YOUTH AT RISK SERVICES

Foster Parents Association - Promotes quality family foster care and advocates for the rights and needs of children in foster care.

Child Abuse Prevention Team (CAPT) - Focus on the prevention and general public awareness of child abuse. They are the sponsoring agency for OUR HOUSE, the Wilkes Children's Advocacy Center. Provides infant massage, parenting classes, public awareness, SAFE kids, Child safety programs, car seats, professional development, and child abuse prevention.

Communities In Schools of Wilkes County - Provides mentoring programs for youth-at-risk in Wilkes County. The programs enhance social, emotional, and intellectual skills by providing one-on-one adult volunteers during regular activities and special events. Also provides projects for youth in need.

SERVICES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Wilkes Adult Developmental Activity Program (ADAP) - Provides adults with developmental disabilities opportunities to work via mobile work crews and supported employment; opportunities to access community services like banks, stores and health facilities. Opportunities to participate in recreational outings such as movies, Merlefest, Walker Center events and vacations. Also, opportunities for personal growth through Basic skills classes and counseling. Wilkes A.D.A.P. Inc. also provides transportation via contacted services with Wilkes Transportation Authority.

Summer Program for Exceptional Children (SPEC) -  Provides a 4 to 5 week summer program for children with exceptional learning disabilities.

Wilkes Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - Provides a link between the hearing impaired and the deaf communities by providing interpreting services, referral services, message relays, technical assistance, and computer assertive note taking system. The center offers hearing aids to the indigent through the Hearing Aid Bank and they teach sign language classes year round.

Wilkes Developmental Day School - Provides a comprehensive child development training program for developmentally and multi-handicapped children ages birth to 21 years.

HEALTH AND COUNSELING SERVICES

Community Health Connection, Inc. Dedicated to the purpose of raising awareness levels about preventable diseases and promoting positive lifestyles. This is accomplished through the following: Education, Communication, Resources, community involvement and referral. Three primary focus areas of CHC are: Wilkes County School System, community settings, Business and Industry.

Hospice of Wilkes County- Provides comprehensive in-home care for the teminally ill and their families.

MESH - A mobile medical unit that provides comprehensive health care for adolescents at the four Wilkes County high schools one day per week to students who otherwise might go without health care.

Pastoral Care and Counseling Center – Provides faith-based psychotherapy, education, and consulting services to the foothills and northwest North Carolina.

Wilkes YMCA - Provides after school child care, Senior Bridge club, Youth-in-Government for High School Kids, Annual Triathlon, Adult/Youth Sports, Summer Day Camp, Wellness programs: Aerobics, strength training, ready to be Fit, FitLinxx, Aquatic programs; swim lessons, swim team, water aerobics, lifeguard / CPR classes.

Old Hickory Boy Scout Council - Offers training in leadership and respect for nature to boys ages 6 to 19, while building fit minds and bodies to help boys become men of good character.

Girl Scouts (Tarheel Triad Council, Inc.) - Comprehensive youth development program serving girls ages 5 - 17. Members participate in a variety of activities designed to help them develop their full potential, learn to relate to others, develop positive self-esteem and ensure an appreciation of value of community service.

Wilkes County 4-H Program - Promotes "learn by doing" experiences to promote social, educational and leadership development through after-school programs, community clubs and special-interest group and school enrichment.

SENIOR SERVICES

Foster Grandparents Program - Enrolls seniors age 60 and over to work in schools, day care and Headstart centers, and other agencies. Grandparents are assigned to one station where they serve one to three "special kids" 20 hours weekly.
Senior Companions Program -  Trained part-time senior citizen volunteers provide extended support services for fragile elderly who are at risk of losing their independence.

Respite Care of Wilkes County and Wilkes Senior Citizens Center- Provides Respite Care in home-aide level 1, which is a house cleaning service for older adults who are 60 and over who need constant supervision. They relieve the primary caregiver to take a much-needed break from their caregivers duties. They also provide educational classes, health information, health screenings, social activities, exercise classes, trips and Blue Ridge Senior Games through the Senior Center.

Wilkes Senior Citizens Council - Transportation/escort, information and referral, chore services. Home hospital and telephone visits/calls. Educational materials, therapeutic recreation, counseling, loan of medical equipment, outreach, Senior Companion station, prescription drugs, client assessment and evaluation, protective service, consumer protection, housing, legal assistance, heat relief, discount cards and press releases.

CRISIS AND BASIC NEEDS SERVICES

American Red Cross (Wilkes-Alleghany Chapter) - Provides emergency and disaster preparedness training, food, clothing and shelter assistance to victims of local disasters, including single-family fires; provides food and beverage support for local fire fighters; provides communications and financial assistance and counseling to families with military members during family emergencies; performs blood collection services for patients in area hospitals; teaches CPR and First Aid classes and water safety instruction.

BROC – Provides assistance for the unmet needs of low-income clients, the dislocated workers and elderly of Wilkes County and refer to agencies to best serve their need to stop eviction notices, cut off notices, food and other emergency services.

Care Connection – Offers information and referral to those in need of help with any kind of crises.

Samaritan Christian Ministry of Wilkes, Inc. - Our mission is to feed the hungry in Wilkes County. Meals are served on Saturday. There are a total of 17 delivery sites where bag and plate lunches are distributed

Catherine H. Barber Memorial Homeless Shelter - Provides temporary overnight shelter and one hot meal a day for individuals and families who are homeless.

Sheltered Aid for Families in Emergency (SAFE) - Provides shelter, counseling and assistance to victims of family violence and abuse, rape or incest.
