Annual Campaign Raises over $715,000
United Way incoming president Luther Parks announced that this year’s community campaign raised $715,359 in gifts and pledges. “Although we faced many obstacles, and troubling economic times, the good citizens of Wilkes County stepped forward to assist others in need.”

Over 170 attended the Annual Meeting to celebrate. Wilkes Regional Medical Center won the “Above and Beyond” award for doubling their campaign this year. Tyson Foods, Duke Energy and Nationwide Insurance won the divisional awards and North Wilkes High School took the overall “best school” award for the second straight year. Wilkes Adult Developmental Activity Program (ADAP) was the top fund raising United Way Partner Agency.

Outgoing President Gerald Lankford was recognized for his service. Lankford turned over the presidential gavel to Luther Parks who served as 2009-2010 campaign chairman. New board members were recognized and voted on. They included Mark Canter of Lowe’s Companies, Mark Church of Church and Church Lumber Company, Richard Collier of Louisiana Pacific/Roaring River, Eric Cramer of Wilkes Telecommunications, Rachel Jordan of Hemric & Yale, Karen Worley of Bridgetree Inc., Jean Graf and Carol Hermann. Tim Murphy, executive director of Child Abuse Prevention Team/Our House was selected to a one year term as the Partner Agency representative.

Special recognition was given to Biscuitville of Wilkesboro and to Wilkes County Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris Shew for their special association with United Way during this past year. Shew won the celebrity biscuit cook off and presented his $4,000 winning check to United Way.
