Campaign Update
Story from 12-14-2011 Wilkes Journal-Patriot
Wilkes United Way’s 2011 fundraising campaign, in its final stages, has generated about $314,000, announced United Way Executive Rick Stegall at his board’s monthly meeting Tuesday.
“We’re a little ahead of where we were this time last year. That’s a good sign,” said Stegall. Wilkes United Way didn’t set a specific dollar amount for a goal this year.
Wilkes United Way and its partner agencies have seen a significant increase in requests for programs and services this year.
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s requests for food, electrical assistance, fuel, job assistance, counseling, training or abuse related issues, we’re all seeing an increase. There is a lot of suffering going on right now in our county.”
He added, “With unemployment rates still high and folks struggling, all of our partners are seeing increases. Across the county, staff of crisis-based organizations have seen a 15-18 percent increase in requests for food and a 20 percent increase in requests for fuel and electricity.”
Stegall said requests for assistance with rent and mortgage payments are up about 14 percent. Requests for clothing are well ahead of the number in prior years.
“These are truly troubling times for a large portion of our county,” said Stegall.
“United Way, our partnering agencies and all of the human service organizations in the county are working hard to just keep up with the demand. But, we all have a commitment to make every dollar, every donated item, go as far as we can.”
“Wilkes County has always been a caring community. It has the reputation of a community that takes care of its own. We sincerely appreciate all those who have been able to help with donations and pledges this year.”
But, Stegall repeated, the need continues to be great.
